Abstract
The history of twentieth-century Panama reveals how political geography shaped power dynamics during the Cold War. Panama’s strategic position and the long U.S. control of the Canal produced social tensions, inequalities, and rising nationalism. This study traces the Hay-Herrán, Hay-Bunau Varilla, and Torrijos-Carter treaties to explain the evolution of Panamanian sovereignty, the militarization of the isthmus, and the canal’s hemispheric relevance. It also examines the final crisis surrounding Manuel Noriega, preceding the canal’s transfer to Panama in 1999.
