Abstract
This study examines the history and impact of salt iodization in Chile as a public health strategy to combat iodine deficiency. It analyzes the role of iodine in human health, particularly in preventing endemic goiter and cretinism, and evaluates the socioeconomic effects of its implementation in Chile since 1979. It explores the achievements in reducing diseases related to iodine deficiency, as well as the challenges faced, such as iodine excess and changes in dietary habits. The results highlight the success of salt iodization in improving health, productivity, and social equity, positioning Chile as a model for preventive intervention.
